I had the honor and pleasure of taking Capt Chris Phillips fishing today. We both have a charter tomorrow so we had to go find some fish for our trip. I informed Chris about the previous day fishing and he agreed with me that we shout go take a look. What I have to report today is great news. There were reds everywhere. It was like a redfish convention was going on.

The was clear water so we were able to sight cast pretty much all day. I had a chance to take a couple of shots at the reds with my fly rod. It had been a while since I pulled out the long rod. So I was little rusty on my casting but I didn’t let that stop me. I made a couple of good shot at them and I lucked out and caught one.

Despite the damage that Hurricane Ike did, the fishing has been great. I am glad I finally had a chance to get out. There are a couple of new spot that I found. As soon as I hit them I will post up my results.

Tight Lines

Despite what people say about not fishing the day after a cold front, well I did it anyway. It was a risk I had to take. I took out George Spitzer from San Fran CA and friend John a Houstonian, today. Started out working the north shore line but the wind and the swells were going down the shoreline a blewn it out. So onto plan B, fish the back lakes. Knowing the duck hunter were out we had to keep a close eye for them. I like to give those guys some room. As we approached one of the lakes I noticed the birds going insane all over the place. I figure it was to double hook up time. WRONG!!!!! We fished several different group of birds without any luck. Explain that one.

So I noticed further down the shoreline that several birds were on top of some bait. I hit the trolling motor on high speed towards them. When we arrived white shrimp were hopping like crazy. I figure reds easy pickens. Wrong once again it was stingray feeding away. By now I was getting paranoid. I’m thinkin this is not good. I need some fish to magically appear. By the grace of god, wish was granted. The reds started tailing, rolling, and coming up to the surface popping shrimp. What a sight to see. Sight casting to reds on fly nothing like.

George’s first red was text book sight casting. Spotted the red, perfect cast, did the strip… strip,….stop… strip….and then BAM fish on thing. Awesome. Talk about a big height off my shoulders.

For the rest of day. It was sight casting to reds. There in groups of twos, threes, or more. They were all good sized fish. As the day went on the fish got smart and felt us from a good distance. Just lifting the rod up was enough to spook them out. So we decided to call it a day.

John decided to clean the two reds they decide to keep. While cleaning them he decided to open their stomachs open. I always like to do that so we can find out what they are feeding on. The pics below will show what these two reds were finding on. They were caught in to different locations.

What a day. Slick calm, green water, and very clear. Started off in the south shoreline, we had a couple of blow ups on topwaters but nothing major. As we were walking back to the boat we notice the bird working north of us. So we ran back to the boat and took off towards the birds. Rob and I caught a bunch of schoolies. The length ranged from about 14 to 17 inches.

We decided to head to the North Shorline and do a little wading there as well. Good thing we did, we got into tailing reds and more trout. The reds were a blast today. They were rolling over and popping the topwater. Then all of a sudden bam they finally smash the topwater.

Over all it was a fun day, and we found some fish. So it made the day even better. I do have some date available so if your interested give me a call.

Sorry for the late fishing report. This charter took place on Setp 10th, but I have also included the 9th as well. David Watkins joined me on Tuesday the 9th for a little prefishing fun. We were able to pick up some trout and some reds. Lots of blow ups. Little trout seemed to be everywhere and hitting the topwater.

On the 10th David’s buddy Lonnie flew in to join us. Fishing wasn’t as good as the previous day. I’m not sure if Ike anything to do with it. I did notice the water level was higher than the day before. We still caught fish on tops. Lonnie did have a big blow up, but didn’t get a chance to set the hook on the fish.

All in all it was a beautiful day, and I had a good time with Lonnie and David.

After a rough time because of the storm, things are finally getting back to normal. We are finding fish scattered all over the place. To be honest, most of my charters lately have been in Aransas Pass. Fishing ole Brown and Root Flats. That flat has been pretty good to me, even when the water is high. So guys my schedule is open. Here in the next month or so I will start to targeting big trout for those enthuistist.

On a different note. Starting next year I will start offering Quail hunts. So if you enjoy bird hunting, make plans for a Quail hunt in South Texas. As soon as I have more details I will post them up for you guys.

Tight Lines,

Wednesday was the Keene party. Mr. Keene, his son Mike and myself started of wading behind Stagger Island. There were plenty of bait hangin around, water was a little off color so it wasn’t a good spot for sight casting. So we moved further south down the shoreline. We lucked out there, there was plenty of clear water. Good thing too, because our original thoughts were to wade fish a little but it must be mating season for stingrays. They were everywhere!!! So I poled the boat instead. We came across some tailing reds. Nice little school, probably about 20 reds. Mr Keene casted the fly beautifully and hooked a red. The only thing was it was the runt of the school but still it was a tight line.

The school spooked out once the fish was hooked and we lost track in which way the went since they split up. We moved on to Lake Caranuhaca and Greens Lake, there were found sheepshead against the shoreling with there backs out of the water. We must have had a dozen or more shots at them but we had nothing they were interested in.

Overall the day was successful. The conditions were nice. Early morning the wind was blowing 2-4 mph by midday it was blowing about 15-20mph. The water temp was in the mid 90s. I the wind keeps this up we may luck into some really nice day with clear water and tailing fish. Until next time tight lines.

Picked up a charter in Aransas Pass, TX I was helping out my buddy Capt. Dean “Slowride” Thomas. I on occasion run charters down south. I decided to fish Brown and Root Flats, that is actually one of my favorite spots to fish from a kayak. The wind of course blown like normal. We had an early morning start. We found birds working the drop off first thing in the morning but nothing was underneath them. I was really hoping to pick up some trout. No luck there though. So we paddled towards the spoil islands and we found a mullet convention. Mullet were blownin up and scattering all over the place. Within the mullet there was small trout and lady fish. We also manage to sneak up on a school of reds and we pick one up there. We moved further down and I spotted a pod tailing but they didn’t last long they felt us there I guess. We come onto several more schools of reds moving. They want nothing to do with us. Towards the end of the trip we can the Sail boat Channel and found a porpoise swimming around feeding. All in all it was a decent day. Beautiful day on the water.
